Coliforms

Coliforms are bacteria which are present within digestive systems of animals and humans. The coliform found in water can indicate pollution of the water source from faecal contamination. As Coliforms are easy to detect and often indicate the presence of more hazardous pathogens, testing for coliform is used as an indicator for the presence of other pathogenic bacteria,

Most colifom bacteria are harmless but some rare strains of E.coli can produce a serious illness. If coliform bacteria are present in your drinking water there is an increased risk of contracting a water-bourne illness.

E.coli

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a bacteria which is found living within the intestines of healthy animals and people. The majority of E. coli are harmless and some may cause mild diarrhoea. There are some more dangerous strains of E. coli, however which can cause bloody diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

Most healthy adults will recover from an E. coli infection within a week. However, E. coli O157:H7 infection may be hazardous to children or elderly people who may develop a life threatening kidney failure ( hemolytic uremic syndrome ).

Sulphite Reducing Clostridia

The detection of Sulphite Reducing Clostridia within a water sample can indicate ground water contamination of your water supply. In particular, Clostridium perfringens indicate faecal contamination.
